Kamilari is a quiet traditional village with a panoramic view at the Messara valley, Psiloritis and the Libyan Sea.
At the big sandy beach of Kalamaki (2km) you will find cafes and taverns which offer excellent drinks and food, plus free umbrellas and sunbeds on the beach.
Festos (3,5 km) is the second most important ancient Minoan center.
Matala (7km) became famous when in 1960s hippies from all over the world arrived there to live in the well-known caves of Matala situated near the beach.
Getting there
From Heraklion (about 60 km):
head towards Mires and Festos. After Festos you will pass the Agios Ioannis village and you will see the sign which sends you to Kamilari, after 2 km through the orchards and olive groves. You will follow the road to Kalamaki and you will see Olive luxury suites on the right side of the road.
From Chania and Rethimnon: Follow the national road from Rethimnon towards Spili, Agia Galini and Timpaki. Pass Timpaki and the military airport and after several meters, turn towards Kamilari.
If you don’t have your own car, there is an everyday bus service Heraklion-Lasithi from Heraklion to Kamilari. There are more bus routes towards Mires, Timpaki, Festos and Matala.

Leider war meine Erfahrung mit diesem Gastgeber sehr enttäuschend. Bereits zu Beginn der Buchung gab es Schwierigkeiten, da die Reise versehentlich gebucht wurde._x000D_
Weder der Gastgeber noch Airbnb konnten damals eine kulante Lösung finden, obwohl ich sofort Kontakt aufgenommen hatte._x000D_
Ich habe die Reise letztlich beibehalten, doch kurz vor dem geplanten Aufenthalt wurden mein Partner und ich krank, und unser Kater erlitt einen Schlaganfall und erblindete._x000D_
Ich habe den Gastgeber um eine Termin-verschiebung gebeten, was er abgelehnt hat._x000D_
Wenige Tage später musste ich die Buchung schweren Herzens stornieren._x000D_
Trotz meiner mehrfachen, sehr höflichen Kontaktversuche und der außergewöhnlichen Umstände zeigte der Gastgeber keinerlei Entgegenkommen oder Menschlichkeit. Eine Antwort auf meine letzte Nachricht habe ich bis heute nicht erhalten._x000D_

Die Kommunikation war insgesamt schwierig und wenig empathisch. Ich verstehe, dass Gastgeber Regeln einhalten müssen - aber in diesem Fall hätte ich mir einfach etwas mehr Verständnis und Mitgefühl gewünscht. Letztendlich bin ich komplett auf meinem Geld sitzen geblieben.

My wife and I stated 2 weeks, 26th - 9th September. Villa was beautiful, clean, pool was fabulous and the cleaner was so nice._x000D_
Walk into Kalamaki took 10 minutes, beautiful scenery, magnificent eating places, wonderful._x000D_
Host was very communicative, had the pleasure of meeting Dimitrios on our last day._x000D_
I’d return in a heartbeat and most definitely will.
